Welcome! You have reached the website of playwright Michael Bettencourt. Everything begins at the synopses page, with thumbnail descriptions of full-lengths, one-acts, and
short pieces for the stage as well as screenplays. The scripts are in MS Word format. You can also read reviews of the plays, get a list of awards, and see posters.
There is a section of childrens plays with material for young audiences (K - 4), middle schoolers, and teenagers. Many of the plays for middle schoolers can also be done by high schoolers and vice versa.
You can also get news about upcoming events and peruse a résumé (which includes a list of productions, readings, awards, and so on).
If you decide to use a script for readings, workshops, productions, or any other purpose, please contact me at 315 25th Street, #1, Union City NJ 07087 • (201) 770-0550 • m.bett@verizon.net [note the "period" in "m.bett"] to obtain permission -- you will most likely receive a prompt “Yes.”
Two other sections may draw your interest. Positive Rejections quotes a few of the less-stinging dismissals I have received in my SASE envelopes, and Thoughts on Theatre are essays and interviews on the nature of this rough beast slouching toward a theatrical Bethlehem. Many of these essays have appeared on Scene4, an excellent monthly compendium of articles about theatre around the world. (This link will open a new window.)
I hope you enjoy what you find here, including some of the “non-theatre” work, such as my essays, poems (a set of which I wrote for a very young girl, called Alphabet Poems for Kara Jones, novels and novellas (a few, like I Dare You and Freezing Moon, are for middle-schoolers), and stories, and all responses are welcome: establishing a dialogue with people is just as important as getting the work out there and having it done.
